Russian painter (1874-1934)
Alexandre Gustave de Salzmann was a Georgian-born painter, illustrator, caricaturist, applied artist, scenographer and theatrical lighting designer from the Russian Empire, of Caucasus German descent. He usually signed his early German work as Alexander von Salzmann, Alexander Salzmann or A. Salzmann. His career connected Munich Jugendstil, the artistic circle around Wassily Kandinsky and Marianne von Werefkin, the experimental theatre at Hellerau, the avant-garde culture of revolutionary Tiflis and the French circle surrounding the spiritual teacher George Gurdjieff.
