Alexander Afanasyevich Potebnja was a Russian Imperial and Ukrainian linguist, philosopher and pan-Slavist of Ukrainian Cossack descent, who was a professor of linguistics at the Imperial Kharkov University. He is well known as a specialist in the evolution of Russian phonetics.
