Alexander Obrenović became king of Serbia in 1889 at thirteen, inheriting a throne shadowed by the feuds between the Obrenović and Karađorđević dynasties. He ruled through adolescence and into young adulthood, but his marriage to Draga Mašin - a widow older than him and unpopular with the military and political elite - sealed his fate. On the night of 11 June 1903, a group of Royal Serbian Army officers led by Captain Dragutin Dimitrijević stormed the palace, hunted the royal couple through darkened rooms, and killed them both. The murders ended the Obrenović line and returned the rival dynasty to power.
