About this person

Commissioned in 1992 from Moscow's combined arms school, Chayko climbed through tank and combined-arms commands before the General Staff Academy in 2012. When Russia entered Syria in 2015 he ran logistics and liaison as chief of staff, then cycled through multiple stints leading the force there between 2019 and 2024. He held the Eastern Military District in 2021-2022, a window that covered the invasion's launch. Ukraine named him responsible for the killings around Kyiv - Bucha among them - that brought the first war-crimes spotlight. Named Hero of the Russian Federation in 2020, he took the Aerospace Forces in 2026.
