Born in Buenos Aires in 1959, Alberto Fernández earned his law degree at 24 and became a professor of criminal law before entering politics as a Peronist adviser. In 2003 he was named Chief of the Cabinet of Ministers, serving the full term under Néstor Kirchner and into Cristina Fernández de Kirchner's presidency - still the longest tenure that post has seen. He won the 2019 election with 48% of the vote, defeating Mauricio Macri under the Frente de Todos banner. The first two years were consumed by COVID-19 and strict lockdowns; the economy began recovering in 2021-22, but inflation climbed to its highest since 1991. The Economist called him "a president without a plan". In April 2023 he announced he would not seek reelection, and Javier Milei took office that December.
