1st Margrave of Brandenburg (1157-70)
He turned a stretch of contested borderland into Brandenburg — the core of what would one day anchor Prussia and, eventually, modern Germany.
Albert was born around 1100 into a world of shifting Saxon dynasties and fragmented marches along the empire's eastern edge. For a brief window between 1138 and 1142, he held the duchy of Saxony, but lost it in the churn of noble politics. The real prize came later: in 1157, he secured the title of margrave of Brandenburg, carving out a new territorial power from the marchlands. He governed it until his death on 18 November 1170, laying the administrative and military groundwork for a region that would grow far beyond his lifetime.
