About this person
Abu Ahmad Abdallah ibn al-Mustansir bi'llah took the title Al-Musta'sim bi-llāh in 1242, becoming the 37th Abbasid caliph. Born in 1213, he ruled from Baghdad during the final years of a dynasty that had governed the Islamic world since the eighth century. His reign ended on 20 February 1258 when Mongol invaders took the city. He was killed that day, and the caliphate that had defined an era died with him.
