Ahmad Yasawi

Ahmad Yasawi was born in 1093 into a Turkic-speaking world where mystical poetry had yet to find its vernacular voice. He studied under the spiritual guide Yusuf Hamadani, becoming a Hanafi scholar before turning toward popular mysticism - the kind that spoke to ordinary people, not just the learned. He composed his verse in Middle Turkic, making him the earliest known poet to write in a Turkic language rather than Arabic or Persian. That linguistic choice was also a spiritual one: he founded the Yasawiyya, the first Turkic Sufi order, which spread rapidly through the regions where his language was understood. He died in 1166, but the order he created became a template for Sufi practice across the Turkic-speaking world for centuries.
