Ahmad Yasawi

Ahmad Yasawi was born in 1093 into a Turkic-speaking world where mystical poetry had yet to find its vernacular voice. He studied under the spiritual guide Yusuf Hamadani, becoming a Hanafi scholar before turning toward popular mysticism — the kind that spoke to ordinary people, not just the learned. He composed his verse in Middle Turkic, making him the earliest known poet to write in a Turkic language rather than Arabic or Persian.
