King of Portugal
Portugal's third king ruled for twelve years under two unflattering epithets — "the Fat" and "the Leper" — names that stuck harder than most of what he accomplished on the throne.
Born 23 April 1185, Afonso Sanches was the second son of Sancho I of Portugal and Dulce of Aragon, but the eldest to survive. He inherited the crown on 27 March 1211 after his father's death. His twelve-year reign ended with his own death on 25 March 1223, leaving behind a kingdom and two nicknames that told more about his body than his statecraft.
