Finland Swedish baron, geologist, mineralogist and Arctic explorer (1832–1901)
He commanded the first ship to cross the entire Northeast Passage — the Arctic route along Eurasia's northern edge that had defeated explorers for centuries. The 1878–1879 Vega Expedition turned a troubled gamble into one of Swedish science's highest achievements.
Born into a noble Finland-Swedish family of scientists in 1832, Nordenskiöld was a geologist and mineralogist in the Grand Duchy of Finland until his political activity forced him to Sweden in 1857. There he entered the Parliament and the Swedish Academy. In 1878 he led the Vega Expedition along the northern coast of Eurasia — a route no one had completed. The enterprise began badly, but by 1879 Nordenskiöld had done it: the first full crossing of the Northeast Passage. He died in 1901, the Arctic passage behind him.
