Companion of the Islamic prophet Muhammad (c.594-c.653)
One of Muhammad's companions, Abdullah ibn Masud earned recognition in Sunni tradition as the second-greatest interpreter of the Quran in history—and the foremost of his own era.
Born around 594, Abdullah ibn Masud became a companion to the prophet Muhammad during Islam's formative years. His proximity to the faith's founding figure and his command of Quranic text positioned him as an authority on interpretation, a role Sunni tradition would rank above all his contemporaries. Known also as Abu Abd al-Rahman, he carried that reputation until his death around 653, leaving a legacy as one of the earliest and most trusted voices in understanding Islam's central scripture.
