A military general who rode with Liu Bei through the chaos of collapsing Han China, his name now inseparable from the brotherly oath and battles that built a kingdom — then cut short by his own men's blades in 221.
Zhang Fei joined Liu Bei early in the warlord's rise, bound by a loyalty that carried through the Red Cliffs campaign in 208–209, the seizure of Yi Province by 214, and the grinding Hanzhong Campaign of 217–218. Alongside Guan Yu, he formed the inner circle that accompanied Liu Bei through defeat and consolidation. When Liu Bei founded the state of Shu Han in 221, Zhang Fei served as both general and politician in the new order.
