About this person

Born in Egypt in 1926, Yusuf al-Qaradawi was shaped by figures like Hassan al-Banna and became intellectually tied to the Muslim Brotherhood, though he said he was no longer a member and twice declined its leadership, in 1976 and 2004. He moved to Doha and built a publishing empire: more than 120 books, a website called IslamOnline launched in 1997, and eight international prizes for Islamic scholarship. His Al Jazeera show "Sharia and Life" became his widest platform, pulling an estimated 40 to 60 million viewers and making him one of the most influential Islamic scholars alive. That influence came with friction: his support for Palestinian suicide bombings against Israelis led the UK to refuse him entry in 2008 and France to bar him in 2012. He died in September 2022.
