About

Born to strawberry farmers in rural Akita Prefecture on 6 December 1948, Suga left for Tokyo after high school and worked his way through Hosei University. He became an aide to Representative Hikosaburo Okonogi in 1975, then won a seat on the Yokohama Municipal Assembly in 1987 and entered the House of Representatives in 1996. A close ally of Shinzo Abe, he served briefly as Minister for Internal Affairs and Communications in 2006, then returned in 2012 as Chief Cabinet Secretary — a role he held for the entirety of Abe's second term.
