He maneuvered out from under Louis XIV's thumb, played the War of the Spanish Succession right, and became the first of his dynasty to wear a crown — Sicily first, then Sardinia when he had to trade down.
Victor Amadeus II inherited the Savoyard states at nine in 1675, his mother acting as regent until he forced her out in 1684. Louis XIV had arranged his marriage to keep Savoy in France's orbit, but Victor Amadeus broke free and joined the War of the Spanish Succession on the winning side. The reward in 1713 was the Kingdom of Sicily — the royal crown his house had never held — though he was compelled to swap it for the Kingdom of Sardinia in 1720.
