National Hero of Indonesia

About this person

Born 2 June 1897, he moved from teacher to Marxist organizer, founding Struggle Union when orthodox communism wouldn't hold his vision. The state he helped theorize into being turned on him: he worked as philosopher, guerrilla, and spy through years of exile, always outside the center. On 21 February 1949, republicans executed him in the confusion of the independence war. He founded the Murba Party, and the republic named him national hero after the fact.
