Yi Pangwŏn was born 21 June 1367, the fifth son of Yi Sŏnggye, who would become King Taejo and found the Joseon dynasty. He played a major role in establishing the new regime alongside his father. After Taejo's abdication, Pangwŏn's elder brother took the throne as King Jeongjong - but not for long. Jeongjong abdicated, and Pangwŏn ascended as Taejong, the third monarch of Joseon. His reign set the stage for his son, who would rule as Sejong the Great. Taejong died 8 June 1422.
