3rd King of Joseon Dynasty in Korea
The third king of Joseon who helped his father topple a dynasty, then maneuvered past an elder brother to take the throne himself — and fathered Sejong the Great.
Yi Pangwŏn was born 21 June 1367, the fifth son of Yi Sŏnggye, who would become King Taejo and found the Joseon dynasty. He played a major role in establishing the new regime alongside his father. After Taejo's abdication, Pangwŏn's elder brother took the throne as King Jeongjong — but not for long. Jeongjong abdicated, and Pangwŏn ascended as Taejong, the third monarch of Joseon. His reign set the stage for his son, who would rule as Sejong the Great. Taejong died 8 June 1422.
