About this person
Tadamichi Kuribayashi was a general in the Imperial Japanese Army and a diplomat before the war sent him to a volcanic rock in the Pacific. Assigned command of Iwo Jima's garrison, he broke with doctrine: no banzai charges, no theatrical waste of life. He lived as his men did, sharing their hardships in the tunnels and fortifications he designed. The Americans expected to take the island in five days. Kuribayashi held it for 36. He is believed to have died leading a night attack on American positions around 26 March 1945, though his body was never identified.
