Sophus Lie built the mathematics of continuous symmetry - the language that describes how shapes and equations transform smoothly without breaking. His work gave physicists and geometers a way to see what stays constant when everything else flows.

About this person

Marius Sophus Lie was born in Norway on 17 December 1842. He largely created the theory of continuous symmetry, then turned it loose on geometry and differential equations - problems that had resisted older tools. Along the way he made substantial contributions to algebra, reshaping how mathematicians thought about structure itself. He died on 18 February 1899, leaving a framework that would quietly underpin much of twentieth-century physics.
