Sergei Tikhanovsky was born on 18 August 1978 and built a following as a YouTuber and businessman before channeling that platform into direct challenge against Belarus's entrenched president. When he declared his candidacy for the 2020 election in May of that year, the state moved fast - arrest came within 48 hours. His wife, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, stepped into the race as the main rival to Lukashenko in the contested vote that followed. Tikhanovsky remained in solitary confinement through five years of that aftermath, released on 21 June 2025 after a visit to Belarus by US representative Keith Kellogg.
