Ruler of Seljuk Turks
An Oghuz Turk warlord who died around the turn of the 11th century, now remembered because an entire dynasty carried his name forward for centuries.
Seljuk led a band of Oghuz warriors in Central Asia during the late 10th and early 11th centuries. He died around 1007 or 1009, but his sons and grandsons built an empire that stretched from Anatolia to Persia. The dynasty they founded—named for him—would reshape the medieval Middle East and give its name to a Turkish town near ancient Ephesus.
