Born into a Bengali family in Hyderabad in 1879, Naidu studied in Madras, London, and Cambridge, where she worked as a suffragist before the pull of home drew her back. She joined the Congress party's fight against the British Raj, became a follower of Gandhi and the idea of swaraj, and in 1925 was appointed Congress president. Her poems - children's verse and graver work on patriotism and tragedy, including "In the Bazaars of Hyderabad" in 1912 - earned her literary renown. When independence came in 1947, she was named Governor of the United Provinces, the first Indian woman to hold such an office. She died two years later, in 1949.
