Born 31 December 1935, Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud was the 25th son of Saudi Arabia's founder—one of the influential Sudairi Seven brothers. He governed Riyadh for 48 years starting in 1963, then moved to defense minister in 2011 and crown prince the following year. He became king on 23 January 2015 after his half-brother Abdullah's death. His reign brought Saudi Vision 2030, the intervention in Yemen's civil war, and the 2017 decree permitting women to drive.
