Biography

About

Pantaleon practiced medicine in Nicomedia, Bithynia, refusing payment for his work—a model of charity that earned him veneration as an unmercenary healer in the Eastern Christian tradition. During the Diocletianic Persecution of 305 AD, he was martyred for his faith. By the Late Middle Ages, Western Christianity had elevated him to the ranks of the Fourteen Holy Helpers, a group of saints invoked against specific afflictions. His Greek name, Panteleïmon, means "all-compassionate."
