The tenth wife of the Islamic Prophet Muhammad
One of Muhammad's wives, taken captive after the Battle of Khaybar in 628 when both her father and husband were killed. Born into the Jewish Banu Nadir tribe, she holds the title "Mother of the Believers" in Islamic tradition.
Born around 610 or 614 in Yathrib to the Banu Nadir, one of the Jewish tribes of Arabia, Safiyya was the daughter of Huyayy ibn Akhtab. At the Battle of Khaybar in 628, her father and her husband Kinana ibn al-Rabi were both killed. She was taken captive by the early Muslims in the battle's aftermath and became Muhammad's tenth wife. Among Muslims she is remembered as a Mother of the Believers. She died sometime between 664 and 672 and is buried at the al-Baqi cemetery in Medina.
