King of West Francia from 922 to 923
He took the crown his brother once held, ousting a Carolingian king who'd followed that same brother to the throne — a tight dynastic knot in tenth-century France that ended with Robert dead within a year of his election.
Born around 866, Robert built power as Count of Poitiers, Count of Paris, and Marquis of Neustria and Orléans while his brother Odo reigned as king. When Odo died in 898, the throne passed to the Carolingian Charles the Simple. Robert watched that arrangement hold for over two decades. In 922 he led the move to overthrow Charles and was elected King of West Francia in his place. He ruled just under a year, dying on 15 June 923.
