About

Born in Rajamadam village in Tanjore district on 4 December 1910, Venkataraman studied law and built a practice in the Madras High Court and Supreme Court. As a young man he threw himself into the independence movement, joining the Quit India agitation that challenged British rule. After independence he was appointed to the Constituent Assembly and the provisional cabinet, then won election to the Lok Sabha four times. He served as Union Finance Minister and Defence Minister, and held state posts under K. Kamaraj and M. Bhaktavatsalam — work that earned him the title Father of Industrialisatio…
