About this person
Rajendra Prasad came up as a lawyer, journalist, and scholar in Bihar, joining the Indian National Congress during the independence movement. A supporter of Mahatma Gandhi, he spent time in British prisons during the Salt Satyagraha of 1930 and the Quit India movement of 1942. After the 1946 constituent assembly elections, he served as Minister of Food and Agriculture from 1947 to 1948, then was elected President of the Constituent Assembly that drafted India's Constitution. When India became a republic in 1950, that same assembly elected him the country's first president. He stepped back from Congress party politics to establish a tradition of non-partisanship for the office, encouraged the development of education, and advised government behind the scenes. Re-elected in 1957, he became the only president to serve two full terms. After leaving office, he quit the Congress and set up new guidelines for parliamentarians that remain in use.
