Only daughter of the Archduke Franz Ferdinand (1901-1990)
The daughter of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and Sophie, Duchess of Hohenberg — both killed in the Sarajevo assassination that lit the fuse on the First World War. She and her brothers became orphans the day the twentieth century changed.
Sophie Marie Franziska Antonia Ignatia Alberta von Hohenberg was born 24 July 1901, the only daughter in a family that stood outside the strict lines of Habsburg succession. On 28 June 1914, her parents were assassinated in Sarajevo — the shot that set Europe ablaze. She and her two brothers were left without mother or father as the Great War unfolded from that single act. She lived until 27 October 1990, carrying a surname and a story bound to the hinge of history.
