King of Bohemia (1253-1278)
A medieval king who assembled one of the largest territorial holdings in Central Europe — Bohemia, Moravia, Austria, Styria, Carinthia, Carniola — and reached for the Holy Roman crown, only to die on a battlefield without it.
Ottokar II was born around 1233, the second son of Wenceslaus I of Bohemia, and educated for church administration while his older brother Vladislaus stood in line for the throne. Through his mother Kunigunde, daughter of Philip of Swabia, he carried Hohenstaufen blood. He became King of Bohemia in 1253 and began accumulating titles: Margrave of Moravia from 1247, Duke of Austria from 1251, Duke of Styria from 1260, Duke of Carinthia and landgrave of Carniola from 1269.
