Otto was born sometime between 830 and 851, entering a world where Saxony sat at the edge of Frankish control. He became Duke of Saxony in 880, inheriting a realm that required constant defense and negotiation as the old Carolingian structure weakened around him. His thirty-two years in power were marked by military campaigns that secured Saxon borders and diplomatic maneuvering that kept his duchy viable amid fragmenting royal authority.
