Olof Skötkonung, son of Eric the Victorious and Sigrid the Haughty, took the throne around 995 and became the first Swedish king about whom history offers real detail. Around 999 or 1000, he allied with Denmark's Sweyn Forkbeard and helped crush Norway's Olaf Tryggvason at the Battle of Svolder, then carved up the defeated kingdom — Olof claimed four districts in Trondheim plus Møre, Romsdal, and Rånrike.
