Olof Skötkonung, son of Eric the Victorious and Sigrid the Haughty, took the throne around 995 and became the first Swedish king about whom history offers real detail. Around 999 or 1000, he allied with Denmark's Sweyn Forkbeard and helped crush Norway's Olaf Tryggvason at the Battle of Svolder, then carved up the defeated kingdom - Olof claimed four districts in Trondheim plus Møre, Romsdal, and Rånrike. He brought Christianity to central Sweden, though Norse belief persisted in remote corners for another two centuries and never fully died. He died in 1022, leaving behind the first Swedish coins and a kingdom no longer defined by raids.
