About this person

Oliver Reginald Kaizana Tambo was born on 27 October 1917. He became an anti-apartheid activist and revolutionary in South Africa, eventually joining the African National Congress. When the apartheid state forced the ANC underground, Tambo left the country to keep the organization alive from abroad. He served as President of the ANC from 1967 to 1991, steering it through decades when its domestic leadership was imprisoned or banned. He died on 24 April 1993, a year before the elections that ended white rule.
