Olavo de Carvalho spent the 1980s writing on politics and philosophy from the margins, then found a platform in the 1990s with columns in O Globo and other major Brazilian outlets. In the 2000s he pivoted to blogs and social media, where his anti-communist screeds and attacks on modernity found a growing audience. By the late 2010s he had become a polarizing force in Brazilian public life, called the intellectual father of the country's new right and linked to Jair Bolsonaro, though he dismissed the association. His writing mixed philosophy, astrology, and conspiracy theory in ways that mainstream academics rejected outright. In 2005 he moved to Virginia, where he lived until January 2022, dying days after a positive COVID-19 test.
