Nnamdi Azikiwe

Born in Zungeru in 1904 to Igbo parents, Azikiwe moved between Nigerian regions as a child - Onitsha with his grandmother, Lagos later - and emerged fluent in Hausa, Igbo, and Yoruba, a rare trilingual grounding that shaped his pan-ethnic vision. He left for the United States, where he went by Ben Azikiwe, studied at Storer College, Columbia, the University of Pennsylvania, and Howard, and trained as an athlete serious enough to petition colonial authorities for a spot on Nigeria's 1932 Olympic team. Returning to Africa in 1934, he worked as a journalist in the Gold Coast and used the press as a lever for political agitation, writing toward independence. That activism carried him home, where he became the architect of Nigerian nationalism and the face of the independence push that succeeded in 1960. He served as governor-general until 1963, then as president during the First Nigerian Republic until 1966, when the state he helped birth began to fracture.
