Nilo Procópio Peçanha was born on 2 October 1867 and built a political career that took him from the governorship of Rio de Janeiro (1903-1906) to the vice presidency in 1906. When President Afonso Pena died in 1909, Peçanha stepped into the top office and served out the remainder of the term until 1910. The assumption of power placed him in Brazilian history as frequently considered the nation's first Afro-Brazilian president, a designation that carried controversy during his lifetime. He died on 31 March 1924.
