Nicola Rizzoli was born on 5 October 1971 and began officiating in Italy's Serie A in 2002, earning FIFA's international list by 2007. The twin peaks came fast: he took the whistle for the 2013 Champions League final between Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich at Wembley, then a year later refereed Germany against Argentina in the 2014 World Cup final at the Estádio do Maracanã on 13 July. Back home he swept seven straight AIC Serie A Referee of the Year awards from 2011 through his final season in 2017. That February, Soccer 360 named him among the top five referees of the 21st century, weeks before he retired from the pitch.
