About

Born to a peasant family in 1875, Kalinin worked the metal shops of Saint Petersburg and joined the Bolsheviks early enough to fight in the failed 1905 revolution. After the October Revolution succeeded in 1917, he became mayor of Petrograd, then rose to head the new Soviet state in 1919—Chairman of the Central Executive Committee, a position he held until 1946. He joined the Politburo in 1926 and stayed there, a fixture in the inner circle, but Stalin's rise left him with titles and no leverage. He retired in 1946 and died the same year.
