Masaoka Noboru took the pen name Shiki in Meiji Japan and set about remaking two ancient forms that had calcified. As a poet, author, and critic, he argued for reform of tanka and practiced what he preached in haiku, writing at a pace that bordered on possession. The 20,000 stanzas he left behind weren't just prolific - they were a structural break, enough to earn him a chair beside Bashō, Buson, and Issa in the canon. He died in 1902 at 34, having spent his short life bending a centuries-old tradition until it could hold the weight of the new century.
