She rose onto the tips of her toes and changed ballet forever. Whether Marie Taglioni was the first to truly dance en pointe remains unconfirmed, but she was the Romantic era's most celebrated ballerina—the one everyone came to see.
Born in Sweden on 23 April 1804, partially of Italian descent, Taglioni spent most of her life between the Austrian Empire and France. She became a central figure in European dance history, commanding stages at London's Her Majesty's Theatre and the Paris Opera Ballet's Théâtre de l'Académie Royale de Musique. The Romantic ballet era was cultivated primarily at those two houses, and she was its brightest star.
