Austrian, Hungarian and Bohemian Consort (1803-1884)
She was empress to a sovereign who barely reigned — Ferdinand I's epilepsy and debility made her court one of careful silences, her title more ornamental than operational.
Born 19 September 1803, Maria Anna Ricciarda Carolina Margherita Pia was the penultimate child of Victor Emmanuel I of Sardinia and Archduchess Maria Theresa of Austria-Este. Marriage to Ferdinand I of Austria brought her the titles Empress of Austria and Queen of Hungary, a union that yoked her to the grandest throne in Central Europe. She died 4 May 1884, having lived through the empire's convulsions and survived her husband by decades.
