Holy Roman empress (1651-1673)
She was five years old when Velázquez painted her into the most analyzed canvas in Western art — Las Meninas — and she remained his subject through childhood, a Spanish infanta whose face survives because a painter chose to look.
Margaret Theresa was born on 12 July 1651, daughter of King Philip IV of Spain and elder full-sister to Charles II, the last Spanish Habsburg. Velázquez made her the central figure in Las Meninas and returned to her in painting after painting as she grew. At some point she married Leopold I, becoming Holy Roman Empress, German Queen, Archduchess of Austria, and Queen of Hungary and Bohemia. She died on 12 March 1673, twenty-one years old.
