About this person

Born Sabbaghian in 1956, an engineer and teacher from a poor family shaped by revolutionary thinkers, he joined the Office for Strengthening Unity after the 1979 revolution. Appointed provincial governor in 1993, he was removed with all other governors in 1997 and returned to teaching until Tehran's council elected him mayor in 2003, where he reversed his predecessor's moderate reforms. His 2005 presidential campaign took 62% in the runoff; he became president that August. He introduced gasoline rationing in 2007, cut interest rates, and grew increasingly isolated - fighting reformers, the Revolutionary Guard, and Supreme Leader Khamenei over dismissed ministers and a controversial adviser. On 14 March 2012 he became the first president summoned by parliament to answer for his governance. Term-limited in 2013, he tried to run again in 2017, 2021, and 2024; the Guardian Council rejected him each time.
