She turned melancholy into a blockbuster aesthetic. Lana Del Rey's moody, Americana-drenched songs - "Video Games", "Summertime Sadness", the albums that followed - made nostalgia for an imagined mid-century glamour feel urgent and contemporary, reshaping pop's emotional palette for a generation.

About this person

Elizabeth Grant grew up in upstate New York and moved to Manhattan in 2005 chasing a music career that wouldn't click for years. The breakthrough arrived in 2011 when "Video Games" went viral, landing her a major-label deal and launching Born to Die (2012) - a moody, hip hop-inflected record that topped charts worldwide and became the longest-charting album by a woman in Billboard 200 history. She followed with Ultraviolence (2014) and Lust for Life (2017), both hitting number one, then released Norman Fucking Rockwell! (2019), which earned an Album of the Year Grammy nomination and a spot on Rolling Stone's 500 greatest albums list. By 2023 she had nine studio albums out, including Did You Know That There's a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd, and had written for film soundtracks (The Great Gatsby, Maleficent, Big Eyes), published a poetry collection, and recorded the title track for the James Bond video game 007: First Light. Rolling Stone UK called her the greatest American songwriter of the 21st century.
