Biography

About

Born in Kiev in 1879 to a Polish family, Malevich absorbed Impressionism, Fauvism, and Cubism through reproductions and Russian collectors before finding his own path. In 1915, working in a Cubo-Futurist mode, he developed Suprematism: pure geometric abstraction on monochromatic grounds. His Black Square, shown at the Last Futurist Exhibition 0,10 in Petrograd that year, marked the break. He taught in Vitebsk from 1918, founded the UNOVIS collective in 1919, and in 1927 took his work to Warsaw and Berlin — the only time he left Russia.
