Duke of Burgundy
A duke who murdered his way toward the French throne, then paid for it the same way. John the Fearless ran Burgundy like a sovereign state, killed the king's brother to seize power, and triggered a civil war that tore France apart — until someone returned the favor on a bridge in 1419.
Born 28 May 1371 into the French royal family, John inherited the Duchy of Burgundy in 1404 and immediately set his sights on controlling a kingdom whose king, Charles VI, had lost his mind. In 1407 he had Charles's brother, the Duke of Orléans, assassinated in a bid for the regency. The murder ignited the Armagnac–Burgundian Civil War, fracturing France while England pressed its claims in the Hundred Years' War.
