John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough

Churchill served as a page under James, Duke of York in the 1670s, earning advancement through courage and diplomacy. His role in crushing the Monmouth Rebellion in 1685 secured James on the throne, but three years later he helped orchestrate the military conspiracy that deposed him during the Glorious Revolution. William III made him Earl of Marlborough, though Jacobite accusations landed him briefly in the Tower of London. His marriage to Sarah Jennings proved decisive: her intimacy with Queen Anne brought him the captain-generalcy and a dukedom after Anne's accession in 1702. Leading Allied forces in the War of the Spanish Succession, he won at Blenheim, Ramillies, Oudenarde, and Malplaquet between 1704 and 1709, victories built as much on logistics and coalition management as battlefield tactics. When Sarah's relationship with the Queen shattered, Marlborough fell with her, forced into exile until George I restored him in 1714. A stroke two years later ended it.
