Japanese supercentenarian, verified longest–lived man in history (1897–2013)
He held the world's attention not for what he did, but for what he endured: 116 years and 54 days, longer than any other verified man in recorded history. When he died in 2013, the 19th century lost its last surviving son.
Born on 19 April 1897 in Japan, Kimura lived through three centuries and outlasted every benchmark. He became the world's oldest verified living man on 25 September 2011 at 114, after Peru's Horacio Celi Mendoza died. On 28 December 2012, he surpassed Christian Mortensen's record to become the oldest man in history whose age could be confirmed. Between 17 December 2012 and his own death on 12 June 2013, he held the title of oldest verified living person. He remains the only man ever documented to reach 116.
