Jerome identified him as the same person called "James the Just" and "James, brother of Jesus" in scripture, understood by some as a cousin rather than sibling, and Papias of Hierapolis linked him to "James, son of Alphaeus," one of the Twelve Apostles. The Western Church traditionally commemorated him alongside Philip on 1 May, a date the Roman Catholic calendar shifted to 11 May in 1955 to make room for the Feast of St Joseph the Worker, then moved again to 3 May in a later revision.
