A 13th-century Dominican who assembled the medieval world's most popular book of saint stories — part miracle, part folklore, all designed to hold a congregation's attention.
Jacobus de Voragine was born around 1230 in Italy and joined the Dominican order. He compiled the Golden Legend, gathering the legendary lives of the medieval church's greater saints into a single collection. The work became one of the most widely read religious texts of the Middle Ages. He later rose to archbishop of Genoa, serving until his death in July 1298.
